At Jesus’ Feet: Finding Peace When Life Feels Crazy

Watercolor of Mary sitting calmly at Jesus’ feet while Martha works in the background, showing peace over busyness.

Has this ever happened to you? Your favorite uncle comes to visit. After dinner, everyone’s laughing in the living room, enjoying his stories. Meanwhile, you're in the kitchen helping your mom serve dessert, and getting frustrated. Your sister should be helping too. Upset, you march into the room to pull her away, but your uncle smiles and says, "Come, sit and join the fun; we can all get dessert later.”

That moment feels a lot like the Gospel reading for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Luke 10:38-42. Martha was doing the work—justified, overwhelmed, and frustrated—while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus. And Jesus reminded them, and us, that being with Him is the better choice.

Two thousand years later, we’re still living in Martha‑mode—juggling alerts, deadlines, and demands. But Jesus' invitation still stands: "Come sit!" because at the feet of Jesus, we find peace, guidance, and rest in a world that never slows down. (Quick note: These are my personal reflections. If you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally distressed, please don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Jesus meets us through prayer—and sometimes through counselors, doctors, and trusted mentors too.)

In this blog, we'll look at what's pulling us away from the feet of Jesus in 2025, why sitting with Him helps us, and a few simple ways to sit at the feet of Jesus every day.

Luke 10:38–42 (KJV)

"Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

1. What Pulls Us Away

“Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things …” (Luke 10:41)

Just like Martha, we often let the wrong things tug on our hearts. These distractions, Hustle Culture, Doom‑Scrolling, Comparison Loops, and Financial Uncertainty, are sneaky—they promise to make life better, yet they end up stealing our calm.

Big Distraction Why It Feels Strong Simple Verse Quick Fix
Hustle Culture (Working all the Time) We think doing more makes us worth more. “Better is an handful with quietness …” (Eccl 4:6) Take one small rest break today.
Doom‑Scrolling-(watching bad news online) Scary stories keep our eyes on trouble. “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings …” (Ps 112:7) Turn off news for one hour.
Comparison Loops- (Comparing myself to others) Social media shows only the best parts of others. “… comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” (2 Cor 10:12) Thank God for one thing that makes you unique.
Financial Uncertainty (Worring about finance) Rising prices can scare us. “Your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need …” (Matt 6:32) Tell Jesus one money fear and ask for help.

Why These Distractions Matter

Think of your mind like a radio. Each distraction is a noisy station. When we flip through stations all day, the music of Jesus’ words gets lost in the static. Slow down, turn the dial, and tune in to Jesus to hear his words.

Picture This

Imagine you are carrying a heavy backpack filled with rocks. Every distraction above is another rock. When you sit at Jesus’ feet, you can lay the backpack down. He never meant for you to haul it everywhere!

Action Step: Write your biggest worry on paper. Lay the paper on the floor, place your Bible on top, and pray, “Jesus, I leave this at Your feet.”

With an understanding of a few things that are distracting us, let's move our focus to why it is important to sit at the feet of Jesus.

2. Why Sitting With Jesus Helps

When Mary sat with Jesus, she gained gifts that Martha nearly missed. The same gifts are waiting for us.

Gift From Jesus What It Means KJV Reminder
Peace A calm heart, even when life is busy. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace …” (Isa 26:3)
Direction Knowing what to do next. “He shall direct thy paths.” (Prov 3:5‑6)
Joy Deep gladness no one can steal. “That your joy might be full.” (John 15:11)

How These Gifts Feel To Me

  • Peace is like a quiet lake on a windless morning. Even if storms roar around me, the water inside stays still.

  • Direction is like a bright flashlight on a dark trail. I can take the next safe step without tripping or bumping into things, hurting myself.

  • Joy is like helium in a balloon. Troubles may press, but joy lifts my heart higher and higher.

My Story

I once felt nervous about doing a presentation. I prayed: "Jesus, give me the message that will impact your people positively." My heart slowed down. I felt God remind me, “I am with thee.” I walked onto that stage smiling, knowing that Jesus was guiding my words and even my mistakes! A friend once said to me that when you make a mistake, that is God's way of getting the listener's attention.

Action Step: Read Luke 10:38‑42 out loud. Circle the words sat and heard. Ask Jesus to help you do the same today.

Now, let's turn our focus to a few ways to sit at Jesus' feet.

3. Easy Ways to Sit at Jesus’ Feet

There are many ways that you can focus on Jesus, but here are my top 5.

  1. Quiet Ten: Sit still for 10 minutes each morning. Read one Bible verse and talk to Jesus.

  2. Breath Prayer: Breathe in and think, “Jesus, You are here.” Breathe out and think, “I give You my worry.”

  3. Screen Break: Pick one evening each week with no phone or TV. If you are a person who falls asleep with the TV on, turn it off.  Use the time to read, pray, or journal.

  4. Sing a Hymn: Play a worship song while making breakfast and sing along.

  5. Prayer Buddy: Text a friend, “How can I pray for you today?” Kneel and pray for each other.

Action Step: Choose one idea and add it to your calendar today.

Closing Thoughts:

So you now know what's pulling us away from the feet of Jesus in 2025, why sitting with Him helps us, and a few simple ways to sit at the feet of Jesus every day. In every busy day, remember Mary chose the best place—right at Jesus’ feet—and that place is open for you too. When life gets noisy, stop, breathe, and picture yourself sitting with Jesus. He promises, “My peace I give unto you” (John 14:27, KJV). No one can steal that peace. Walk into today with a lighter heart and remember that Jesus is only a whispered prayer away.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, I am often busy and worried. Help me sit at Your feet like Mary did. Fill me with Your peace, show me what to do, and give me joy. Amen.
