Digital Sabbath Guide: 7 Cozy Steps to a Peaceful, Screen-Free Day with God

Digital Sabbath: a woman putting a cell phone in a box with a cup of tea and bible next to it.

Have you ever caught yourself reaching for your phone before your eyes are even open? How many times a day do you grab your phone without thinking? Screens help us work, play, and stay connected, yet they can crowd out quiet time with God. What if one day—just one—you unplugged and tuned in to peace? What if one day—just one—you unplugged and tuned in to peace?

That's the heart behind a Digital Sabbath. It's one whole day away from every screen, so our hearts can settle down and hear Him better.

A screen-free day where you let your soul settle, sip tea and soak in God's presence. This is my personal view—if you need help managing screen use or mental health, please seek professional support.

In this post, I'll walk you through how I enjoy a peaceful Digital Sabbath using just a cup of tea, a Bible, and some cozy planning.

"And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; … and he rested." – Genesis 2:2 (KJV)

God didn't need rest, but He modeled it for us to follow. A Digital Sabbath isn't about rules—it's about receiving rest and quiet from the One who made us.

1. Why Take a Digital Sabbath?

Most of us touch a screen from sunrise to bedtime—phones, tablets, TVs. All that bright light can make our minds tired and our hearts noisy, leaving us overstimulated and spiritually dry. A "Digital Sabbath" is one whole day with no screens. It gives our eyes, minds, and souls a break so we can hear God more clearly.

God invites us to rest:

"And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; … and he rested." Genesis 2:2 – KJV

2. Gather Your Sabbath Kit:

  • A favorite mug of calming tea ☕️
  • Your Bible (KJV) 📖
  • A notebook and pen 🖊️
  • A small box or basket to hold phones 📦
  • A cozy KozzyCo tee to remind you of God's love 🧡

What to Do

Why It Helps

Scripture (KJV)

Step 1 – Friday Sunset

Place every phone in the box. Close laptops. Turn off the TV power strip.

A clear start shows you mean it.

Psalm 4:8 – “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Step 2 – Early Morning

Brew your tea. Sip slowly. Pray: “Be still.”

Warm tea slows the rush.

Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Step 3 – Sunrise Walk

Take a gentle walk outside. Notice birds, clouds, and fresh air.

Creation reminds us of God’s new mercy.

Lamentations 3:22-23 – “His compassions fail not. They are new every morning.”

Step 4 – Gratitude Journal

List five gifts from God, big or small.

Writing thanks grows joy.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “In every thing give thanks.”

Step 5 – Mid-Day Kindness

Call or visit someone without social media. Share a kind word or small help.

Service turns rest into love.

Galatians 5:13 – “By love serve one another.”

Step 6 – Evening Candle Time

Light a candle. Read a Psalm aloud. Pray with family or alone.

Soft light calms the heart.

Psalm 119:105 – “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Step 7 – Next-Day Sunrise

Before you pick up a phone, write two lessons you learned. Ask: “How will I carry this peace into the week?”

Reflection keeps the Sabbath alive.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart… and he shall direct thy paths.”

4. What You May Feel:

  • Quieter mind – Less buzzing in your head
  • Deeper Prayer – More space to hear God's whisper
  • Family smiles – Real talk, genuine laughs, no scrolling
  • Fresh ideas – Rest often sparks new dreams

5. Share Your Sabbath Story:

Slip into your KozzyCo "God's Child"tee during Step 2 or Step 3. After the Sabbath ends, snap one photo and post it with #KozzyDigitalSabbath. Tell one thing God showed you. Your story may inspire a friend to unplug and seek Him too.

6. Ready to Begin?

Pick your sunset. Set your phone/basket box in plain sight. Gather your favorite calming tea, your Bible, and your blanket/throw. God is waiting to meet you in the quiet.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28 – KJV

7. Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of rest. Thank You for the sunlight, the birds, and the gentle steam of warm tea. As we set our screens aside, please quiet our hearts. Help us hear Your still, small voice. Fill our homes with peace, our minds with Your truth, and our hands with kindness toward others. Teach us to carry this calm into every day that follows. We trust You to guide our steps and refresh our souls. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.

🌿 When the sun rises after your Digital Sabbath, notice how clear your mind feels and how open your heart is to God's voice. Try setting aside one screen-free day each month—or even each week. Little by little, rest will become a habit, and God's peace will follow you into every busy day.
