🌿 Loved from Generation to Generation: Trusting God with Our Children

Have you ever tucked your child into bed and whispered a silent prayer, wondering if you're doing enough? I sure have. One night, after a particularly long day of mom-ing (you know those days), I sat beside my child’s bed, looking at her sleeping, and felt this gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit: “They’re mine first.”

That moment shifted something in me.

Parenting can feel like a hose full of pressure before you open the pipe. We want to get it all right. But God reminds us that His love spans generations—and that He is the perfect Father. As I write this today, I am raising a teenager. I'm seeing my baby girl change.  She is growing up, becoming more private, and seeking answers.  And I wish for the little, innocent girl who once looked to me for everything.  So I am leaning on God to show her the way and help her navigate this wide world she is now exposed to.

This post is for every parent, grandparent, mentor, and guardian who needs a gentle reminder: You’re not alone in raising your little ones. God’s love and promises go before you.

➡️ In this post, I’ll share 3 simple truths to help you trust God more deeply with your children, based on Scripture and grace.
(Note: This is my personal view. If you're struggling in a way that feels overwhelming, please seek help from a trusted professional.)

📖 Scripture Anchors

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” – Matthew 7:11 (KJV)

Even on my best parenting days, I fall short—but God never does. He delights in giving good gifts, not just to us, but to our children.

“But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.” – Psalm 103:17-18 (KJV)

This is such a comfort: God’s mercy doesn’t run out. It stretches across generations.

💛 1. God Cares About Your Legacy

When we raise our children in faith—even imperfectly—God honors it.

🍼 I remember my great grandmother praying over our family at every meal. Her simple, faithful heart made ripples I’m still catching today.

Every parent or guardian wants the best for their child. But as my daughter grows up, I have surrounded her with a community (church members, teachers, doctors, bankers, business owners, coaches, stay-at-home mothers, etc.) that she can turn to for support and guidance on issues, because I know that there will be a time when she will not want to talk to me. Why? She might be afraid of disappointing me, or she might be afraid of me judging her.  Rather than facing issues alone or searching the web for answers, I would rather she talk to someone in her well-chosen community.  The internet, with its vast knowledge, can provide too much information without her having the ability to discern it.  More importantly, I have instilled in her to trust that God will always be there for you.

Try This: Start a small tradition of faith in your home—maybe a verse at breakfast, or a prayer before homework. These moments matter more than you think.

🌱 2. Your Labor Is Not in Vain

“They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them.” – Isaiah 65:23 (KJV)

Those early mornings, those hard talks, those bedtime prayers—they are not wasted. God sees it all.

📖 Even when it feels like your efforts aren’t bearing fruit, trust that God is doing work under the surface.

Try This: Keep a “seed journal”—just a few notes each week about prayers you’ve prayed or moments you’ve seen God working in your child’s heart.

🧸 3. Your Children Are a Gift, Not a Burden

“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” – Psalm 127:3 (KJV)

In a culture that often sees children as inconvenient or difficult, God flips the script: they are a reward. A heritage. A treasure.

👶 When I am feeling exhausted, I have to remember: God delights in your children even more than you do. During these teenage years, I am trusting God more because there is so much I don't know or understand.  When she was younger, I had more control over her life.  As she grows and spends more time away from the family because of school or after-school activities, I have to put more faith in God watching over and protecting her.  I just keep speaking life into her.

Try This: Speak life out loud today. Tell your child, “You are God’s good gift to me.” Say it even if they’re throwing Legos or slamming doors.

☀️ Closing Encouragement

Friend, I have learned that I don’t have to be a perfect parent. I just have to be a present one—with God right beside me.

💌 You are sowing seeds that heaven sees.

I am learning to raise the next generation not in fear, but in faith. I am praying more than I am panicking. I am learning to trust more than try to control.
